Technologies at a glance

Each technology works in a unique way. Use this quick guide to see how they feel and what they’re best for.

Technology What it feels like Think of it for
TENS Tingling/pulsing electrical sensation Sensory stimulation and pain relief
EMS Pulses that produce muscle contractions Muscle activation
Microcurrent Very subtle or sometimes barely perceptible current Lower-intensity electrical stimulation
Heat Sustained warmth Warming, comfort and relaxation
Cold Cooling Post-activity or targeted cooling
Percussion Repetitive tapping/impact Working through muscular tension
Compression Rhythmic or sustained pressure Legs/arms after activity, travel or long days
Vibration Rapid oscillation Gentle muscle stimulation and relaxation
Red/NIR light Usually little physical sensation Targeted light-based wellness sessions

Core Electrotherapy

TENS, EMS, and Microcurrent form the core technologies behind every HiDow device. The table above maps where each one fits. Here’s a quick breakdown of what each one does.

TENS

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation
Uses a low level current at the skin to stimulate sensory nerves. Works through the body’s gate control response, the same mechanism that dulls pain signals before they reach the brain.

EMS

Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Uses a stronger current to activate motor nerves and trigger real muscle contractions. EMS goes a step further than TENS, engaging the muscle itself rather than just the nerve.

Microcurrent

Microcurrent Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation
Uses microampere level current, usually below the threshold of feeling. Works at the cellular level, linked to ATP activity and tissue recovery.

COMPARE

TENS vs. EMS: what’s the difference?

TENS primarily targets sensory nerves. EMS intentionally activates motor nerves and muscles.

Both modes can run on the same HiDow device and electrodes, but the experience and purpose are different.

Thermal Recovery

Heat and cold change the recovery experience without electrical stimulation. They can be used on their own or alongside other recovery methods at different points in a routine.

Heat creates sustained warmth at the target area. It is commonly used when someone wants warmth, comfort or a more relaxed feeling before movement or during an unwind routine.

Feels like: Warmth
Useful when: You want to warm up or relax an area
HiDow products: Revive products · heated accessories · ThermoAir Wave 2.0 · OcuWave

Cold provides localized cooling and is often preferred after activity or whenever cooling feels better than warmth.

Feels like: Cooling/numbing sensation
Useful when: You prefer cooling after activity or for targeted comfort
HiDow products: Hot & Cold Packs · Revive Sleeve · Revive Head Wrap

Light Therapy

Red and near-infrared light therapy use specific wavelengths of light rather than electrical stimulation or mechanical pressure. Unlike a heating pad, the technology is defined by the wavelength and dose of light delivered to the target area.

Red + Near-Infrared Light

What you feel:
Usually very little beyond warmth produced by the device itself

Good fit for:
People looking for a targeted, hands-free light-based wellness modality

Mechanical Recovery

Mechanical recovery technologies use movement or pressure rather than electrical stimulation. Percussion, compression, and vibration each create a different physical experience and can be used at different points in a recovery routine.

Percussion
Rapid, focused pressure for muscles
A moving massage head creates repeated tapping that can range from gentle to more forceful.

Compression
Pressure applied around a limb
Compression wraps surround an area with pressure; some inflate and release rhythmically.

Vibration
Rapid, lower-amplitude movement
Vibration creates rapid, gentle movement and may be paired with rolling, pressure or heat.

When to Use What

Use different technologies at different times for a balanced recovery approach.

Before activity
Heat · EMS · percussion
Warm up, activate muscles, stretch and get ready to move.

During a session
TENS · heat · compression
Create a comfortable, low-effort session that fits your needs.

After activity
Percussion · compression · cold · vibration
Support your post-activity recovery routine.

Wind-down
Heat · gentle vibration · compression
Relax, unwind and settle into better-quality downtime.

Different technologies have different precautions
Always read and follow the instructions included with your device.

User manuals

Do not use TENS/EMS if you:

  • Have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device
  • Are pregnant
  • Have epilepsy

Apply electrodes only to clean, intact skin. Do not place them on the head, front or sides of the neck, across the chest, or over irritated, infected or broken skin.

Do not use electrical stimulation while driving, sleeping or near water. Stop use if you experience pain, burning or skin irritation. Consult a healthcare professional if you have a medical condition or are unsure whether TENS/EMS is appropriate for you.
