TENS
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation
Uses a low level current at the skin to stimulate sensory nerves. Works through the body’s gate control response, the same mechanism that dulls pain signals before they reach the brain.
EMS
Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Uses a stronger current to activate motor nerves and trigger real muscle contractions. EMS goes a step further than TENS, engaging the muscle itself rather than just the nerve.
Microcurrent
Microcurrent Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation
Uses microampere level current, usually below the threshold of feeling. Works at the cellular level, linked to ATP activity and tissue recovery.

TENS vs. EMS: what’s the difference?
TENS primarily targets sensory nerves. EMS intentionally activates motor nerves and muscles.
Both modes can run on the same HiDow device and electrodes, but the experience and purpose are different.

Thermal Recovery
Heat and cold change the recovery experience without electrical stimulation. They can be used on their own or alongside other recovery methods at different points in a routine.
Heat creates sustained warmth at the target area. It is commonly used when someone wants warmth, comfort or a more relaxed feeling before movement or during an unwind routine.

Light Therapy
Red and near-infrared light therapy use specific wavelengths of light rather than electrical stimulation or mechanical pressure. Unlike a heating pad, the technology is defined by the wavelength and dose of light delivered to the target area.

TENS/EMS safety + precautions
Do not use TENS/EMS if you:
- Have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device
- Are pregnant
- Have epilepsy
Apply electrodes only to clean, intact skin. Do not place them on the head, front or sides of the neck, across the chest, or over irritated, infected or broken skin.
Do not use electrical stimulation while driving, sleeping or near water. Stop use if you experience pain, burning or skin irritation. Consult a healthcare professional if you have a medical condition or are unsure whether TENS/EMS is appropriate for you.
